For the majority of us, the first Monday in May brings a bank holiday. However, for celebrities it annually brings together everyone from all realms of fashion, music and film for the Met Gala.
What is the Met Gala?
The Met Gala, (also known as Met Ball) is formally called the Costume Institute Gala. This is an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. The night was centred around the chosen theme, where all guests were expected to design their outfit accordingly. Some of the previous themes from the gala have included: Punk: Chaos to Couture to China: Through the Looking Glass.
Where was the Met Gala held?
The Met Gala took place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York. The night began with a cocktail hour, where guests walked down the red carpet and explored the new exhibition. They were then treated to a surprise performance by Madonna, with her rendition of “Like A Prayer”. This year’s exhibition is spread across three venues: the Anna Wintour Costume Center, The Medieval Galleries at the Met’s main location, and at the Cloisters, further uptown.
What is the Met Gala 2018 theme?
Yesterday, the Costume Institute declared its love of fashion, as it presented “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” This theme was designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art. The theme not only sets the tone for the annual exhibit, but can also cause fashion themes amongst the world’s leading fashion retailers. Last night we witnessed the extraordinary, from papal tiaras, crucifixes, to long trains and angel wings. All attendees interpreted the theme to varying degrees at the Gala. Some kept it simple, whilst others when all out! To get a flavour of the event, here are some of the best creations/outfits displayed last night:
